Product Information

Commemorating the groundbreaking achievement of the first flight from England to Australia, this base metal coin portrays a representation of the open cockpit Vickers ‘Vimy’ aircraft that made the 17,000-kilometre journey in 1919.

An Australian crew comprising Captain Ross Smith, his brother Lieutenant Keith Smith, Sergeant Wally Shiers and Sergeant James Bennett navigated the converted ex-WWI bomber from London to Darwin within 28 days, landing on December 10. These heroic men are pictured on a custom-designed Australia Post stamp affixed to a themed envelope which houses the collectable coin.

Historical Coin Design

The coin portrays a representation of the Vickers aircraft that made the harrowing expedition and a map of the flight path. The design also includes the inscription ‘CENTENARY OF THE FIRST FLIGHT ENGLAND TO AUSTRALIA’ and The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark.

Themed Australia Post Stamp and Envelope

Affixed to the envelope is an official Australia Post $1.00 stamp featuring a historical image of the aircrew in front of their vessel. The themed postmark incorporates the first day of issue, 1 October 2019, and the location of the historic landing, Fannie Bay (PARAP) NT 0820. The envelope features a representation of the historical aircraft among clouds.
