This peaceful, bamboo-eating member of the bear family is native to China. It is easily recognised by the large, distinctive black patches around the eyes, over the ears, and across its round body. Known for its solitary nature, the Giant Panda has an acute sense of smell and can grow up to five feet in height. The lifespan of this bear in the wild has not been confirmed but the oldest captive animal lived to 37 years of age.
The Giant Panda is listed as endangered and although estimations vary, it is thought that there are as few as 1,500 of these amazing creatures left in the wild.
