Proof Quality Pure Silver
Like the sought after Mawson coin, it is struck from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality.
Coloured Reverse Design
The coloured image of the leopard seals appears within the outline of Antarctica. Leopard seals occur exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere, generally inhabiting pack-ice surrounding the Antarctic continent. As part of the Australian Antarctic Division’s scientific program, researchers are studying the abundance and movement of leopard and other pack-ice seals to help monitor changes that occur in the region in response to global warming.
Australian Legal Tender
Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the coin’s obverse depicts Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Presentation Packaging
Each coin is housed in a blue-coloured presentation case, which comes within a stylish outer shipper. A numbered Certificate of Authenticity accompanies each coin.
Limited Mintage
No more than 7,500 individual 1oz silver coins will be released by The Perth Mint.
Interest in the Antarctic as a collector theme became apparent in 2004 with the release of The Perth Mint's Mawson Station commemorative coin (Sold Out). This, the second coin in the Australian Antarctic Territory Series, depicts a coloured image of a leopard seal and its pup.
