Chinese New Year is an important annual celebration for Chinese people around the world to honour family, traditions and deities. As powerful icons of good fortune, dragons play an integral role in Chinese New Year celebrations. The colourful and energetic dragon dance welcomes good fortune into the community and often recreates traditional depictions of the powerful animal chasing a flaming ‘pearl of wisdom’.
Unique Dragon Reverse Design
The reverse of the coin features a dragon with a depiction of a flaming pearl. Dragons are often portrayed pursuing this metaphor for wisdom and enlightenment in fine art, and the imagery is recreated in popular Chinese New Year dragon dances. A performer holds a coloured sphere on a rod which is ‘chased’ by the dragon to the beat of a drum.
