The ever popular Deadly and Dangerous series features some of Australia's most fearsome creatures, with the latest release capturing the ornate beauty of the lionfish. Native to the Indian Pacific, the lionfish is found along the coast of northern Australia, south-western Western Australia and southern New South Wales. It is distinguished by reddish-brown bands, long pectoral and dorsal fins, and venomous spines located on its dorsal, pelvic and anal appendages.
The coin’s reverse portrays a lionfish with an ocean reef and other fish in the background. Also included in the design is the inscription ‘AUSTRALIA’S LIONFISH’.
