An extremely rare two-coin set, this centenary pair represents 100 years of Australian numismatic history. The 1919-dated gold sovereigns were the first struck by The Perth Mint after the conclusion of the First World War. Available in superior quality, the 1919 gold sovereign is featured alongside the 2019 Australia Sovereign, The Perth Mint’s modern tribute to Australia’s first sovereign of 1855 which featured a ‘colonial’ reverse design to differentiate it from its Imperial counterparts.
In Extremely Fine (EF) to About Uncirculated (aUnc) condition, the 1919 sovereign coin’s reverse portrays Benedetto Pistrucci's classic St George and the dragon design with the wyvern-like dragon being trampled by St George’s warhorse. Included on the reverse is The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
The 2019 Australia Sovereign coin is struck in proof quality and portrays a modified Sydney Type I sovereign design, including historic elements such as St Edward’s crown, a laurel wreath and the word ‘AUSTRALIA’. The design also bears the inscription ‘PERTH MINT’ and ‘SOVEREIGN’. Marking the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s birth in 2019, the coin also bears an encircled privy mark ‘200’.
The pair are housed in a fine timber case and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
