From stardust to spectacular collectable The Perth Mint proudly brings you Rare Earth
With original artistry inspired by ancient forces that gave us brilliant treasures, the Rare Earth coin has been crafted from 5oz of pure silver and a natural golden diamond.
Aged at 1.6 billion years, the handset jewel from the Argyle Diamond Mine in Western Australia’s spectacular Kimberley region represents the epicentre of a supernova.
Billions of years ago, supernovas played a stellar role in forging the precious metals we now find on Earth.
A supernova occurs during the final stages of a star’s life cycle and culminates in an explosion of titanic proportions. Scientists believe the colossal force of these events created precious metals such as gold and silver, then catapulted them across the cosmos.
Just like precious metals, rare and brilliant diamonds have been a source of intense fascination for centuries. After being formed deep in the Earth’s mantle under massive heat and pressure, nature propelled them closer to the surface via vast volcanic pipes during cataclysmic eruptions.
Struck in pure silver, Rare Earth’s reverse depicts an artistic representation of a star exploding into a supernova with a handset golden diamond at its centre.
The design includes an interpretation of lava flowing from a volcano and forming the layers of the Argyle Diamond Mine, the origin of the brilliant, naturally coloured jewel.
A subtle patina effect applied to each piece enhances the design’s portrayal of the historic and momentous events. With this highly specialised treatment and its limited mintage of only 1,000, Rare Earth is a unique collectable to treasure always.
