The 2012 Australian Kangaroo One Tonne Gold Coin issued by The Perth Mint has been awarded the title of the largest coin in the world by Guinness World Records.

Recognition from the authority of record-breaking achievements is testament to the vision, dedication and team attitude of Perth Mint staff. "We faced an incredible challenge to produce a coin of this scale, so this is a wonderful endorsement of the talent and expertise of those involved," said Ed Harbuz, Perth Mint Chief Executive Officer.

The record attempt was executed at The Perth Mint earlier this year in the presence of witnesses from the fields of metal assaying, numismatics, quality assurance, and scale calibration and weighing, who verified the specifications of the coin.

Cast from 99.99% pure gold, the coin weighs a total of 1,012 kilograms and measures 80 centimetres wide by 13 centimetres deep.

The reverse of the coin features a Stuart Devlin design of a bounding red kangaroo surrounded by stylised rays of sunlight. "This artistry has been the feature of the Australian Kangaroo Gold Bullion Coin Series 1 kilo release for 25 years, so it was a natural choice," Mr Harbuz continued.

Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the obverse of the coin features an impressive representation of Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and denotes the monetary value of $1 million.

The successful attempt has allowed The Perth Mint to claim the honour from the reigning title holder, the Royal Canadian Mint, who has held the record for the past five years for the Maple Leaf 100kg gold bullion coin.

Originally created as a showpiece to promote the Australian Kangaroo Gold Bullion Coin Program, the one tonne coin is now on permanent display at The Perth Mint and is considered the major drawcard for visitors to its award winning Gold Exhibition.

The Australian Kangaroo Gold Bullion Coin Series comprises 1/10oz, 1/4oz, 1/2oz and 1oz coins which feature identical artistry of a standing kangaroo set against an outback scene in 2012, and a 1 kilo release which reflects the classic Devlin design.
