PERTH MINT COINS COMMEMORATE THE GALLIPOLI LANDING
As the Nation prepares to mark 100 years since the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli, The Perth Mint is proud to release a suite of 2015-dated collectables which honour the spirit and courage of this renowned band of soldiers.
Forming part of a five-year ceremonial program to mark Australia’s involvement in the First World War, The ANZAC Spirit 100th Anniversary Coin Program reaches its pinnacle this year as the infamous Gallipoli campaign becomes the focus across Australia and New Zealand.
In the early hours of 25 April 1915, the neighbouring Nation’s troops landed on the beach that would later become known as Anzac Cove. As they came ashore they were subjected to a relentless barrage of fire, with many killed or wounded in the battle’s opening moments.
With a reported 10,000 Australian and New Zealand troops losing their lives and some 18,000 wounded, the battle at Gallipoli will forever stand out as a defining period in Australian history – one of courage in the face of death and despair.
Perth Mint Sales and Marketing Director, Ron Currie, said that Gallipoli was considered a costly military failure, but from this defeat the ANZAC legend was born.
“The ANZAC Spirit Coin Series recognises this incredible story of valour, mateship and sacrifice, all of which were exhibited at the Gallipoli landing, and The Perth Mint is proud to honour those who served,” Mr Currie said.
The 2015 Baptism of Fire 2oz Gold Proof High Relief Coin depicts Anzac soldiers as they battled to scale the cliffs above Anzac Cove. The design also incorporates a lone soldier in the foreground, a red poppy, the inscription 1915 – BAPTISM OF FIRE, and The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark.
This year’s Making of a Nation 1oz Silver Proof Coin portrays Australian troops in wooden row boats approaching the Gallipoli shore, with its rugged terrain in the background. The design also includes the inscription ‘Making of a Nation’ and The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark.
Issued as legal tender of Australia, the obverse of each coin features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2015 year-date, and the monetary denomination.
To complete the 2015 range of issues in The ANZAC Sprit series, The Perth Mint will release a Lest We Forget 1 Kilo Silver Hero Coin and a Goodbye Cobber 1/4oz Gold Proof Coin in the coming months.
A strictly limited mintage of only 100 of The ANZAC Spirit 100th Anniversary Coin Series – Baptism of Fire 2015 2oz Gold Proof High Relief Coin will be released at $5,050.00; while only 7,500 of The ANZAC Spirit 100th Anniversary Coin Series – Making of a Nation 2015 1oz Silver Proof Coin will be made available for the retail price of $99.00.
