MEDIA RELEASE

HISTORIC PERTH MINT HONOURS TWO NUMISMATIC FIRSTS

To celebrate 25 years since the launch of Australia's first platinum bullion coin, and the nation's first precious metal coin to feature native fauna, The Perth Mint has released a stunning Australian Koala anniversary collector tribute.

Under the authority of the Commonwealth Government, The Perth Mint issued The Australian Nugget 99.99% gold bullion coin program in 1987. By the following year, its phenomenal success motivated the release of The Australian Koala 99.95% platinum program.

Offered in four sizes, ranging from 1oz to 1/10oz, The Australian Koala quickly became the most sought after platinum issue in the world, with the investment series surpassing its first year's sales target of 100,000 ounces within two months of its release.

"Pioneered as part of our long term strategy to encourage the development of the country's platinum industry, the Koala series helped to establish Australia as a major player in the international bullion coin market," said Ron Currie, Perth Mint Sales and Marketing Director.

The Australian Koala maintained its position as global leader for more than a decade, until worldwide demand for platinum began to slow and production of the program ceased in 2000.

In honour of the inaugural issue, the 25th anniversary release will replicate the original design and packaging elements.
The reverse of the commemorative coin, struck from 1/2oz of 99.95% pure platinum, offers the identical artistry created by Australian sculptor and coin designer Michael Tracey for the 1988 release.

Issued as Australian legal tender, the obverse of the coin portrays the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination.

The commemorative is partnered with a 1/2oz 99.9% pure silver medallion, with a reverse design that bears the inscriptions 'Australian Koala 25th Anniversary 2013 Proof Issue' and 'Maximum Mintage 1,200'.

As the means to uniquely authenticate the platinum release, the medallion's obverse features The Perth Mint's iconic swan logo, a special PK25 mintmark, and the mintage number.

Housed in a prestigious wooden gift box within a customised shipper and accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity, the historic collectable is priced at $1,595.00.

As an extremely limited offering from The Perth Mint, only 1,200 of the 2013 Australian Koala 25th Anniversary Platinum Issues will be released.
