This gold proof quality coin is our second modern tribute to the Double Sovereign, a £2 coin minted only twice in Australia - in 1887, to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Jubilee, and 1902, when King Edward VII ascended the throne. Featuring a modern adaptation of the ‘colonial’ reverse created specifically for Sydney Mint’s Type I sovereign in 1855, the design includes a ‘200’ privy mark in reference to the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s birth in 2019.
The coin’s reverse portrays the St Edward’s crown, a laurel wreath and the word ‘AUSTRALIA’, historic elements of Royal Mint engraver Leonard Charles Wyon’s original Type I reverse. The design also includes the inscriptions ‘PERTH MINT’ and ‘DOUBLE SOVEREIGN’. In celebration of the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s birth in 2019, the coin bears the encircled number ‘200’.
