First issued by The Perth Mint in 1990, the Australian Kookaburra is an iconic Australian coin series. Each year, the series portrays a new artistic impression of the kookaburra, a bird with an unmistakable laughing call that’s synonymous with Australia – from the outback to the back yard.
This 2020 release marks the Kookaburra’s 30th anniversary. Struck from 2oz of 99.99% pure gold in high relief, it has an extremely limited mintage of just 125.
30th Anniversary Coin Design
This year’s Australian Kookaburra design portrays a kookaburra perched on a corrugated iron rooftop. The background depicts a stylised impression of sunrise, which along with sunset, is a time of day when kookaburras typically like to call. The inscription AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA 30TH ANNIVERSARY encircles the design.
Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Australian Kookaburra series, the coin has a special obverse featuring a representation of Stuart Devlin’s design for the original 1990 issue. His much-loved artistry, which portrays a kookaburra sitting on a tree branch amid gum leaves, appears below a miniature version of Jody Clark’s effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Included on the obverse are the year-dates 1990 and 2020, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, and the coin’s monetary denomination.
Accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity, the coin is housed in a prestigious timber display case and 30th anniversary illustrated shipper.
