In popular mythology, a unicorn is characterised as a white horse with distinguishing goat-like features. The animal bears a small beard, feathered hooves and a long, slender, spiralling horn which grows from its forehead. According to widespread legend, many unicorns were hunted for their horns due to the magical and medicinal properties it possessed.
As a symbol of purity, grace, wisdom and power, the enchanted beast was well represented in art and heraldry throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
While the actual existence of this mystic animal has never been conclusively proven in modern times, many people still believe in unicorns today.
