PERTH MINT MARKS 100 YEARS OF PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE
As the nation honours World Red Cross Day, The Perth Mint is proud to present a pure silver commemorative coin celebrating 100 years of Australian Red Cross.
Officially unveiled at Parliament House in Sydney by Red Cross CEO Robert Tickner and President Michael Legge, this great Australian story of generosity and compassion is a welcomed theme on the Nation’s legal tender.
Founded on 13 August 1914, Australian Red Cross began its journey by preparing food parcels for soldiers and prisoners of war and caring for the wounded. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers signed up and by World War II, Australian Red Cross had become the country’s largest charitable organisation. Today, one million Australian Red Cross members, volunteers, donors, staff and supporters make a positive difference to the lives of thousands of people in need every day.
Struck from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver, the coin features a series of black and white photographs representing the broad cross-section of society that Australian Red Cross assists, and an image of a World War I nurse surrounding the organisation’s anniversary logo. The inscriptions THE POWER OF HUMANITY and 100 YEARS PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE, and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark also appear in the design.
Speaking at today’s launch, Perth Mint Sales and Marketing Director, Ron Currie thanked the organisers at Australian Red Cross for their continued support in the development of this spirited tribute coin.
“Marking the centenary of Australian Red Cross is a project that The Perth Mint has been particularly proud to undertake, and we are extremely honoured to recognise the generations of Australians who have contributed to this outstanding service,” he said.
Red Cross CEO Robert Tickner said, “It’s a tremendous honour for Red Cross to celebrate 100 years of people helping people in Australia.”
