First British coronation of the 21^st century

Prince Charles ascended the throne on the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on 8 September 2022. Without delay, he was proclaimed King Charles III of the United Kingdom and 14 Commonwealth realms, including Australia. The first British monarch to be crowned in the 21^st century, His Majesty’s coronation at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6 May 2023 features centuries-old ceremonial traditions.

Royal Arms design

Created by John Bergdahl and approved by the King himself, the coin’s reverse features an interpretation of the Royal Arms surrounded by a floral pattern incorporating the flowers of the four nations of the United Kingdom. As well as the inscription ‘THE CORONATION OF KING CHARLES III 6 MAY 2023’, the design includes the King’s cypher - a monogram consisting of the initials of the monarch’s name, Charles, and title, Rex – Latin for King, alongside a representation of the Crown.
