Fiery phoenix

Traditionally described as an eagle-like bird with scarlet and gold plumage, the phoenix is an enduring symbol closely associated with renewal and immortality in many cultures worldwide. Just one phoenix is said to have existed at a time, each living for a period of not less than 500 years. Towards the end of this time, the phoenix built a nest that would become its own funeral pyre. After being consumed by flames, a new phoenix miraculously sprang from its predecessor’s ashes.

Vivid design

The coin portrays a vividly coloured image of a phoenix in flight. The bird is swooping in front of a gothic tower featuring a stained-glassed window, also in colour.
