First British coronation of the 21^st century

Prince Charles ascended the throne on the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on 8 September 2022. Without delay, he was proclaimed King Charles III of the United Kingdom and 14 Commonwealth realms, including Australia. The first British monarch to be crowned in the 21^st century, His Majesty’s coronation at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6 May 2023 features centuries-old ceremonial traditions.

Westminster Abbey design

Created by Natasha Jenkins and approved by the King himself, the coin’s reverse portrays a stylised line drawing of Westminster Abbey. Included in the design is the King’s cypher – a monogram consisting of the initials of the monarch’s name, Charles, and title, Rex – Latin for King, alongside a representation of the Crown.
