Bushland chorus

The kookaburra is a native Australian bird known for its distinctive, laughter-like call that echoes through the bush. Often seen perched on branches scanning for prey, it symbolises the spirit of the Australian wilderness. As a member of the kingfisher family, the kookaburra is unique in that it rarely eats fish, preferring insects, small reptiles, and even small mammals. Its iconic call is often associated with the sounds of the Australian outback, making it a beloved emblem of the country’s natural heritage.

The coin’s reverse depicts a majestic kookaburra soaring above a riverbed, surrounded by rugged grasslands, trees, and rocky terrain. The reverse also includes the inscription ‘KOOKABURRA’, the coin’s weight, purity, fineness and 2026 year-date, along with The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.

The coin’s high relief reverse and obverse are minted on concave surfaces to ensure the optimum flow of metal is achieved by the strike of the die.
