On 9 July 2026, The Perth Mint achieved a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for the largest bar of gold, producing an extraordinary gold bar weighing 521.2 kilograms and refined to an exceptional 99.999% purity.

What began as a conversation about large-scale gold casting soon evolved into a bold challenge.
Could The Perth Mint create not only the world's largest gold bar, but also one refined to 99.999% purity?
It was an ambitious goal that would require meticulous planning, technical precision and collaboration across multiple disciplines.
Over several months, teams from across the organisation worked together to transform that vision into reality.
The result was a gold bar that surpassed the previous world record and established a new benchmark for scale and purity.
The people behind the record
While the finished bar weighs more than half a tonne, the achievement itself is built on something even more valuable: the knowledge, skill and dedication of the people who made it happen.
More than 35 specialists from across The Perth Mint's Refinery and Assay Laboratory contributed directly to the project, bringing together generations of experience in refining, metallurgy, engineering and quality assurance.
The project also drew on expertise from across the broader business, including teams supporting project delivery, safety, logistics, security, communications and stakeholder engagement.
It was a true team effort from start to finish.
Precision at an extraordinary scale
Creating a gold bar of this size required far more than simply melting gold and pouring it into a mould.
Approximately 1.5 tonnes of raw material were prepared throughout the project before being refined into a series of large gold bars.
To create the final record-breaking bar, six large bars and additional smaller bars were carefully loaded into a specially designed graphite mould.
The mould was then placed into The Perth Mint's advanced Flameless Casting Chamber, where the gold was heated to approximately 1,400 degrees Celsius.
The enclosed system enabled the gold to be processed without the use of an open flame, helping minimise employee exposure to molten metal while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality and precision.
Following many hours of controlled cooling, the finished gold bar emerged.
When it was placed on calibrated scales, the result was clear.
521.2 kilograms. A new Guinness World Records title.
