Story

World’s second largest bird

Found only in Australia, the emu is the world’s second largest bird. Although its wings may be small and unfit for flight, the emu compensates with its strong set of long legs, powering it to sprint at speeds up to a thrilling 50km per hour.

Unique in nature, the male emu will protect and incubate the eggs for eight weeks, rarely leaving the nest for food and water. Born with distinctive brown stripes for camouflage, emu chicks become independent around seven months of age.

Emu family design

The coin’s reverse portrays an adult emu walking alongside five young chicks. The background includes a representation of a desert landscape, sky and sun. The inscription ‘AUSTRALIAN EMU’ appears within the design, along with the coin’s weight, purity, 2025 year-date, and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.

Authentication feature

The coin incorporates an authentication feature on the reverse. In the form of a micro-laser engraved letter, it is only detectable under a magnifying glass.

Presentation

The coin is presented in a protective acrylic capsule.
