Story

Bird of many parts

An immortal creature, the Chinese phoenix is traditionally portrayed as a fusion of several other birds – including the head of a pheasant, the body of a mandarin duck, the tail of a peacock, the beak of a parrot, and the wings of a swallow.

2023 Phoenix design

The coin’s reverse portrays a phoenix made up of these constituent parts. In its beak is the flower of a paulownia tree, said to be the only species on which the phoenix will perch. Also included in the design are stylised representations of clouds, symbols of abundance and good fortune, as well as The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.

Memorial obverse

Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the coin bears The Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Obverse, featuring the Jody Clark effigy supplemented with the dates of her reign, as well as the coin’s weight, purity, monetary denomination and the 2023 year-date.

Authentication feature

For additional peace of mind, the coin incorporates an authentication feature in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter. Detectable under a magnifying glass, it’s designed to make it significantly more difficult for the coin to be counterfeited.

Presentation

The coin is presented in a protective acrylic capsule.
