Story

Remarkable source of gold

Discovered during the 1890s, the Golden Mile near Kalgoorlie was thought to be the richest square mile of gold reserves in the world. Most of its original workings were swallowed up during the 20th century with the creation of an enormous open cast pit, now measuring some 3.5 kilometres long, 1.5 kilometres wide and more than 600 metres deep. To this day, the Super Pit continues to produce remarkable quantities of gold.

Fortuitous design

The coin’s artistic representation portrays a Komatsu excavator in the Super Pit open cast mine, and a headframe, or winding tower, such as the one used at the nearby Mt Charlotte Underground Mine. As well as the inscription ‘SUPER PIT AUSTRALIA 2022 1oz 9999 GOLD’, the reverse also incorporates The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.

Authentication feature

The reverse also includes an authentication feature in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter.

Presentation

Housed in a protective acrylic capsule, the Super Pit Australia 2022 5oz Gold Bullion Coin is subject to a maximum mintage of just 500.
