Stately swans

Well-known to First Nations people for thousands of years, the Australian swan’s distinctive black plumage astonished early European explorers. So prevalent was Cygnus atratus in the estuaries, lakes and wetlands of Western Australia that it gave its name to Perth’s premier river and became an important State symbol.

The coin's reverse portrays a swan, Western Australia's iconic bird emblem, swimming gracefully with a cygnet.  A second swan lingers in the background.  The design includes the inscription ‘THE 5oz 9999 AUSTRALIAN SILVER SWAN’ and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
