Story

Famous marsupial

Australia’s most famous marsupial, the kangaroo has appeared on The Perth Mint’s signature coin series since 1989. With superbly observed portrayals of the iconic animal, the renowned Australian Kangaroo series offers pieces featuring ‘reverse gilding’, which switches the selective application of surface gold from a coin’s central motif to the background design details.

Reverse gilded design

The coin portrays a large kangaroo about to leap over a parched creek bed. A windmill and water storage tank, depicted in the background, are gilded in 24-carat gold. As well as the inscription ‘KANGAROO’, the design includes the coin’s weight, purity, 2024 year-date, and a ‘P125’ mintmark signifying The Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary.
