Story

Australian koala

The koala is an internationally recognised symbol of Australia.  An arboreal marsupial, it spends most of its time in the trees.  It feeds on the foliage of the eucalypt at night.  The koala is one of the few mammals, other than primates, that has fingerprints very similar to that of a human.

Iconic koala design

The reverse design depicts a cuddly adult koala gilded in 24-carat gold, resting on the branch of a eucalyptus tree. The inscription AUSTRALIAN KOALA, the weight and fineness, and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark also feature as part of the design.
