Australian koala

The koala is one of Australia’s most endearing marsupials and one who spends most of its life asleep. Nocturnal by nature, the koala is known to doze for up to 20 hours a day in the dappled sunlight which penetrates the middle canopy of their favourite trees.

Iconic koala design

The coin's reverse portrays a close-up portrait of an adult koala with a branch of eucalyptus leaves. The design includes the inscription AUSTRALIAN KOALA, The Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark, and the 2014 year-date.  The coin's high relief reverse and obverse are minted on concave surfaces to ensure the optimum flow of metal is achieved by the strike of the die.
