These kingfishers often make their ‘laughing’ call at dawn and dusk while perched on tree branches to establish territory among family groups. The design of our impressive 5oz silver coin celebrates this familiar behaviour, with the detail enhanced by a brilliant high relief strike.

Iconic design

The coin’s reverse depicts a kookaburra perched on a branch during sunset. The branch is submerged in a river, which is lined with wetland grasses and a gumtree. The design also includes the inscription ‘AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA’, the 2019 year-date, the weight and fineness and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
