Epic eagle

Named for its long, diamond shaped tail, wedge-tailed eagles build enormous nests made from sticks that can be more than two metres wide and four metres deep. They continue to use the same nest year after year, adding to it as necessary.

Each coin is meticulously struck by The Perth Mint from 5oz of 99.99% pure silver.

John M. Mercanti design

The coin’s reverse depicts an impressive high relief and majestic wedge-tailed eagle perching on a tree branch. The design also includes the inscription AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE, the 2017 year date and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.

For this design, The Perth Mint commissioned American sculptor and engraver, John M. Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint. John Mercanti created the reverse design of the American Silver Eagle bullion coin and has produced more coin and medal designs than any other employee in the history of the US Mint.
