Piedfort eagle

Certain to appeal to collectors of the beloved Australian Wedge-tailed Eagle series, this extra-thick coin continues the ancient traditions of the piedfort format.

Twice the weight and thickness of other coins of the same diameter, the piedfort originated in France during the 12th century. Revived by The Perth Mint in proof quality in 2018, the extra-thick format is a fitting canvas for John M. Mercanti’s outstanding design.

Masterful design

The reverse depicts a magnificent wedge-tailed eagle in flight with wings fully extended and stylised rays of sunlight in the background. The design includes the inscription ‘AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE’, the 2019 year-date, the weight and fineness and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
