The Wedge-tailed Eagle series portrays intimate studies of Australia’s largest bird of prey. Each carefully considered design from the former Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, John M. Mercanti, reveals more about the life and habits of this powerful, majestic bird that can be seen across the continent in coastal, desert and alpine habitats.

The coin’s high relief portrayal presents a close encounter with a magnificent wedge-tailed eagle as it swoops on outstretched wings with talons ready to snatch its prey. The reverse also includes the inscription AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
