Story

Australia’s largest burrowing animal

Australia’s largest burrowing animal, the wombat is perfectly built for tunneling with powerful limbs and claws. Like other marsupials, the female wombat has a special pouch in which its offspring completes its development. In this species, the pouch opens backwards to avoid smothering the young animal with soil as its parent tunnels underground.

Coloured design

The coin portrays a coloured representation of a wombat and its ‘joey’ with green vegetation. Other design elements include gum trees, birds and clouds. As well as the inscription ‘WOMBAT’, the reverse includes a ‘P125’ mintmark signifying The Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary, as well as the coin’s weight, purity, and 2024 year-date.
