Story

An arachnid’s account

One of Australia’s most recognisable arachnids, the red-back spider is known for its glossy black body and striking red stripe on the abdomen of the female. Small but highly venomous, the red-back belongs to the widow spider family. It is commonly found throughout Australia, particularly in dry, sheltered places close to human habitation such as sheds, garages, under garden furniture, in wood piles and in outdoor toilets. Females are larger and more distinctive than males and spin strong untidy webs that trap insects and other small prey.

Red-back spider design

The coin’s coloured reverse replicates the original 2006 design of an imposing red-back spider in its web spun around a branch, and several smaller spiders below. Included in the design is the inscription ‘RED-BACK SPIDER’ and a special 20th anniversary privy mark featuring a red-back spider with its pincers prominent and the numeric ‘20’.
