Australian iconic animals

Five designs in the series consist of Kangaroo - is the iconic creature’s strong hind legs and long tail are brilliantly designed to hop great distances. Koala - is a tree dwelling creature believed to get its name from the Indigenous words, meaning ‘no drink’. This is because the koala sources its hydration from a specific variety of eucalyptus leaves and is only seen to drink in drought situations or when ill. Emu - is a large flightless bird recognised by its long neck, brown drooping feathers, pointed beak and large bright eyes.  Kookaburra - is the world's largest kingfisher. It is recognised by its plumage in shades of white and brown. Platypus - is a mammal and monotreme recognised by its soft rubbery bill, thick insulating fur coat, and webbed feet. 

Discover Australia series

Each coin features an artistic representation of the Discover Australia animal series. The Kangaroo coin's reverse depicts a kangaroo set against a coloured outback scene incorporating wild spring grasses and Australian boab trees. The inscriptions DISCOVER AUSTRALIA and KANGAROO, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark and the 2013 year-date are also included in the design.

The Koala coin's reverse depicts an adult koala on a eucalyptus tree stump against a coloured forest scene and picturesque sunset. The inscriptions DISCOVER AUSTRALIA and KOALA, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark and the 2013 year-date are also included in the design.

The Emu coin’s reverse depicts an emu against a coloured desert scene incorporating wild flowers and grasses. The inscriptions DISCOVER AUSTRALIA and EMU, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark and the 2013 year-date are also included in the design.

The Kookaburra coin’s reverse depicts a winged kookaburra against a coloured river scene at dawn. The inscriptions DISCOVER AUSTRALIA and KOOKABURRA, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark and the 2013 year-date are also included in the design.

The Platypus coin’s reverse depicts a platypus against a coloured tropical rainforest scene. The inscriptions DISCOVER AUSTRALIA and PLATYPUS, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark and the 2013 year-date are also included in the design.
