Triumph of light

Diwali is the ancient Hindu ‘festival of lights’. Observed by millions of people in India and around the world, the annual five-day festival represents the triumph of light over darkness. Celebrated with candles and lamps, fireworks, family feasts and the exchange of many gifts, Diwali is also a time to pay homage to Hindu deities, including Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Ganesha, the god of good fortune.

Deity design

The medallion’s portrays representations of hallowed deities Lakshmi with coins emerging from her palm, and Ganesha being attended by a mouse with sweets. Both are framed by an ornate architectural motif with hanging lanterns in the background. As well as The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, the design includes the inscription ‘happy diwali’.
