Double the dragons
Said to have voracious appetites for gold, silver and jewels, Chinese Pixiu are fierce, lion-like creatures with heads resembling that of a dragon. Often portrayed in pairs in art and architecture, their mystical powers are believed to help people attract wealth.
The male guards wealth and is often portrayed in statues leaning his paw upon an embroidered ball, representing supremacy over the world. The female protects against evil spirits and is frequently depicted restraining a playful cub, representing nurture.
Double Pixiu design
The dramatic depiction on this coin's high relief reverse shows two Pixiu sitting on a mound of Chinese coins while grasping a Pixiu club and ball.
