For centuries, Europeans speculated about Terra Australis Incognita – or the great unknown south land. Maritime explorers eventually confirmed its existence, revealing the island continent to be the home of an extraordinary range of wildlife and natural treasures.

Australian animal design

This stunning silver coin features a central opal insert displaying it's beautiful array of colour in the shape of the Australian continent. Mined in three Australian states, opal is a colourful gemstone which in its most precious form is renowned for a spectacular ‘play of colours’.The precious insert is encircled by representations of iconic Australian animals including the kangaroo, emu, koala, echidna, wombat and bilby. Also included on the reverse is the coin’s 2020 year-date, its weight and fineness, and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
