Monumental birthday

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was born in London at 2.40am on 21 April 1926. This 95th birthday tribute recognises the sovereign’s remarkable longevity, her steady hand as Head of State, and her undiminished devotion to duty as she continues to carry out a program of royal engagements at a pace inconceivable to most people her age.

Queen’s first effigy

The coin portrays Mary Gillick’s effigy of the young Queen which appeared on Australian circulating coinage between 1953 and 1964. The portrait overlays a backdrop of stylised wattle, Australia’s national floral emblem, and is surrounded by the inscription ‘H.M. QUEEN ELIZABETH II 21 APRIL 1926’. Also included is the design in The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
