Story

Prominent WA artist

A proud Whadjuk-Yuet-Ballardong man, Kevin Bynder is a passionate artist and teacher whose diverse portfolio of vibrant and striking works includes many Indigenous guernsey and shirt designs for high-profile sporting franchises, as well as murals in both public and private spaces in and around Perth. Kevin’s works are inspired by Western Australia’s natural environment and reflect the history and knowledge of his people who have lived on Nyoongar country for tens of thousands of years.

Inspired by nature

This incredible 2oz antiqued coloured silver coin portraying an original painting of a yongka (kangaroo) bounding through green grass and ochre rocks of the boodja (lands of the Nyoongar nation), with the orange, brown and yellow KattaMorda (Darling Range) in the background. Overhead, the gradually darkening evening sky is portrayed in turquoise, blue and black dots, each representing a djinda (star).

Aboriginal people have honoured kangaroos in art for millennia. Australia’s oldest known rock art is a 17,000-year-old painting of a kangaroo in the north-west Kimberley region. Continuing the tradition, proud Whadjuk-Yuet-Ballardong artist Kevin Bynder’s second coin design for The Perth Mint is from an original coloured painting of a kangaroo in his native Western Australia.

Memorial Obverse

This coin portrays the official Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Obverse, featuring the Jody Clark effigy supplemented with the dates of Her Majesty’s reign – ‘1952 – 2022’.

Presentation packaging

Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, the coin is housed in a contemporary latex case within a beautifully illustrated shipper based off Kevin Bynder's original artwork.

The Perth Mint will donate AUD 10,000 from the proceeds of the coin to Wungening Aboriginal Corporation – an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation which provides culturally secure, confidential and free of charge services to Aboriginal people in the Perth metropolitan area.

Artist Profile

Kevin Bynder

Local artist Kevin Bynder, a proud Whadjuk-Yuet-Ballardong man, is also accompanying us on our reconciliation journey.

Kevin is the creator of a diverse portfolio of vibrant and striking works including Indigenous jersey designs for high-profile sporting franchises (the West Coast Eagles, Perth Wildcats, and Perth Scorchers to name a few).

Following the creation of ‘Pretty Country’ for our REFLECT Reconciliation Action Plan, Kevin produced a stunning mural to welcome people at the entrance to our refinery. Titled Keyiny Moort (meaning ‘One Family’), the artwork contains six different paintings representing the main themes of our diversity focus, including Multiculturalism and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

He is convinced our claims to be genuinely engaged in these areas are authentic. “You can feel the difference between companies that just want to tick boxes, or people that don’t want to go further than a piece of artwork,” he says. “I felt The Perth Mint wanted to do more for Indigenous culture and they want to learn more.”
