Story

Influential ancient calendar

Thousands of years old, the lunar calendar measures time based on the cycles of the moon. Influential in the decisions and beliefs of millions of adherents over time, it is associated with many myths and legends - including The Great Race, in which 12 animals race each other to determine their zodiac position.

12 lunar animal design

The coin portrays the 12 lunar animals in colour. Included in the artistry are representations of sacred mountains, clouds symbolising good fortune, and plants including bamboo, daisies, sunflowers, peonies and pine trees, longstanding floral motifs in traditional Chinese art. The lunar animals surround a bagua with a black and white yin yang symbol in the middle.
