Story

Winged victory

In Greek mythology, Nike was invited to live on Mount Olympus by Zeus, the king of the gods, as a reward for becoming his charioteer during the Titan War. Guiding Zeus’s horses through the battlefields, she is said to have bestowed fame and glory in the form of laurel wreaths on his victorious army.

In 2025, The Perth Mint commemorates the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. This pivotal event in global history is honoured every year on VP (Victory in the Pacific) Day held on 15 August. The day serves as a powerful reminder of Japan’s acceptance of the allied demand for unconditional surrender on 14 August 1945.

Anniversary coin design

The coin presents a powerful portrayal of Nike as Winged Victory. Her muscular figure, symbolising strength, stands with ethereal, feathered wings spread out in full glory. She clutches a sword in her right hand, as a gesture of respect, and a palm wreath in her left, signifying her role as the messenger of victory. As well as the inscription '80 YEARS END OF WWII 2025', the reverse also incorporates The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
