Ngana Nyitting

Artist Kevin Bynder was born in Boorloo/Perth in 1975 to a Whadjuk-Yuet Nyoongar mother and a Widi-Badimia Yamatji father. The title of this stamp issue, Ngana Nyitting, translates as 'My Dreaming' in the Yamatji (Ngana) and Nyoongar (Nyitting) languages. 

Whadjuk boodja, meaning 'country', spans across the Perth region. Whadjuk is one of the 14 Nyoongar language groups of south-west Western Australia. Kevin's maternal grandmother was born on the banks of the Derbal Yerrigan, also known as the Swan River. 

Black cockatoo design

Representing elements of Whadjuk boodja, the coin's coloured reverse features a karak, meaning 'black cockatoo', said to be seen before oncoming rain. Also included is a balga (grass tree) and a nollamarra or kurulbrang (kangaroo paw), both of which grow plentifully around the Perth region. Behind the balga and nollamarra are hills representing the Kaart-Morda (Darling Range). As well as the artist’s initials and 2025 year-date, the reverse also incorporates The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
