Story

Preparing for peace

After World War I, the Australian government needed to raise money to recover some of the costs of waging war, and to assist ex-servicemen with resettlement, vocational training, employment and housing. Peace bonds were a method of raising loans from the general public. Colourful posters urging people to buy the bonds appealed to emotions such as patriotism, pride, gratitude and hope.

Anzac Day design

The coin’s reverse portrays a slouch hat and red poppy flowers, both iconic symbols closely tied to the identity of the Australian Army. Included in the design is a motif representing a torch and an eternal flame, the inscriptions ‘25 APRIL’ and ‘LEST WE FORGET’, the 2026 year-date and a ‘P’ mintmark.

Australia Post stamps

The official $1.70 Australia Post stamp features artwork from a World War I poster. The image depicts a returned soldier embracing his wife and son. The wife holds the medal pinned to her husband’s uniform, while hanging from a wire around the soldier’s neck is a stark trophy of war: a German soldier’s helmet. The design includes the text ‘FOR HOME AND COUNTRY’ and ‘BUY PEACE BONDS’.

The $3 International Post stamp features the poster artwork by renowned Australia poster artist James Northfield (1887–1973). Published in 1919, a returned Australian soldier surveys – and walks towards – a peaceful rural landscape with a small farm in the middle ground, and smokestacks of industry in the distance. The design includes the text ‘HIS FUTURE Make it Sure!’ and ‘BUY PEACE BONDS’.

Presentation envelope

The coin is housed in an illustrated presentation envelope featuring the World War I poster design on a light blue vintage background and the inscription ‘PREPARING FOR PEACE – WORLD WAR I POSTERS’.
