Meet the designers of the 2027 Year of the Goat Proof Coins
The Perth Mint is proud to unveil the Australian Lunar Series III Year of the Goat 1oz Gold and Silver Proof Coins, showcasing the artistry, symbolism and craftsmanship that have made our lunar offering one of the world's most celebrated numismatic collections.
Those born in this auspicious year are believed to be calm, compassionate and creative. They also possess a vibrant spirit, resilience and are often admired for their thoughtful approach to life and artistic talents.
These traits provide an ideal segue into introducing our coin designers Wade Robinson and Natasha Muhl who are responsible for the 2027 artistry of this highly anticipated annual theme.
Design inspiration
This year’s 99.99% pure gold proof coins feature a design by Wade Robinson and continue the tradition of depicting a solitary animal.
“I researched various breeds of goat found throughout Asia, learned their behaviours, and studied their most prominent stances.”
“My design is one of balance. It expresses the goat’s resilience, inner strength and wisdom, while also portraying its gentle and sensitive nature.
“With an understanding of the goat’s tenacity and determination, it was an obvious choice to have it portrayed in its unforgiving mountain surroundings” he concluded.
The coin’s reverse portrays a majestic goat standing proudly on a mountain plain, with rugged terrain and a solitary tree visible in the distance.
The 99.99% pure silver proof coins are designed by Natasha Muhl and typically feature a family group or multiple depictions of the year's lunar animal.
“My decision to feature three goats on the 2027 silver coins conveys great cultural significance”, shared Natasha.
“This trio represents life, vitality and growth; the harmony between heaven, earth and humanity; and embodies the auspicious phrase “Three Goats Bring Bliss”, which signifies the end of winter and the arrival of spring, the renewal of all things, and prosperous new beginnings.
“My artistry represents these beliefs, while embracing the goat’s steadfast yet spirited nature, and the contentment they display in their mountain home”
The coin’s reverse portrays a mature goat, a young goat and a baby goat grazing peacefully amid a mountain range, with a plum blossom tree signifying purity, resilience and hope.
A story to tell
A distinctive feature of the Australian Lunar Series III Coin Collection is found on the shippers in which each coin case is presented. When the shipper for the goat is placed alongside other shippers from the series, the resulting diorama depicts all 12 animals that successfully completed the Great Race.
A love for lunar
Of the hundreds of designs Wade and Natasha have created, the lunar theme holds a special place in their hearts.
For Wade, “My first encounter with the Chinese zodiac came in 2004 with a Year of the Monkey gold coin”.
“It was the first lunar-themed coin I’d designed and the first coin I ever purchased, as I gifted it to my son in celebration of his lunar birth year. It was a memorable occasion for us both”, he continued.
For Natasha, “My interest in other cultures, their lores and beliefs set me on my lunar journey in 2015 when I designed both the gold and silver Year of the Goat coins. To be given the opportunity to tell the tale of the goat again in 2027 has been a pleasure for me”.
