The Perth Mint scores trio of wins in coin awards
The Perth Mint has enjoyed triple success at the 2025 Mint Directors Conference coin awards, winning three of the six categories for excellence in minting and coin production.
The Mint overcame competition from the world’s leading mints in categories for Best Collectible Gold Coin, Best Packaging and Best Sustainability Initiative.
The Best Collectible Gold Coin award recognises The Jewelled Turtle 2024 10oz Gold Proof Coin. The coin is the latest release in the Mint’s Jewelled series of extremely limited mintage luxury pieces, with a maximum of eight available.
The Jewelled Turtle is struck from 10oz of 99.99% pure gold in proof quality, featuring a three-dimensional 18-carat gold sea turtle covered in hand-set pink and white diamonds with emeralds for eyes. The Jewelled series is made possible through a long-standing partnership with Argyle Pink Diamond™ Icon Partner™ Glajz-THG.
The Best Packaging award celebrates the Mint’s innovative approach to packaging for the SpongeBob SquarePants 2oz Silver Proof Gilded Coin. The coin and its case recreate the colour and fun of the popular television program which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2024. The coin is presented in a detailed replica of SpongeBob’s iconic pineapple home and comes in a themed presentation box with customised sleeve.
The Best Sustainability Initiative was awarded to The Perth Mint for its efforts to remove plastic from its packaging for selected 2024 products. The Frida Kahlo 2024 2oz Silver Antiqued Coloured Coin and SpongeBob SquarePants – SpongeBob and Friends 2024 1oz Silver Proof Coloured Coin are available released in presentation boxes comprised entirely of FSC-certified cardboard and paper. The coin insert was also made from paper pulp. The paper packaging is both biodegradable and recyclable.
The protective pillow is the only element of the packaging not made from paper but includes 30% recycled velvet fabric.
The Perth Mint Chief Executive Officer Paul Graham said the trio of awards cemented the Mint’s status as one of the world’s leading precious metals operations.
“We continually strive for quality and innovation in everything we do, so to see this recognition from our peers in the minting industry is very important to us, and a testament to the hard work, dedication, skill and expertise of our employees,” Mr Graham said.
“We put considerable effort into the design and practicality of our coin packaging to match and complement the quality of the coins, and the packaging award is a credit to our product development team.
“The all-paper packaging for two of our key releases in 2024 was the result of a long-term focus on reducing our environmental impact by shifting away from the use of plastic wherever practical without compromising on quality and durability.”
The awards were announced as part of the biennial Mint Directors Conference on 28 April in Cape Town, South Africa.
