A remarkable piece of Western Australia’s history has come home.

In a special moment captured this week, The Perth Mint officially welcomed the return of the 1899 Half Sovereign, one of the rarest coins ever produced in Australia.

The coin was presented to Chief Executive Officer Paul Graham by Coinworks Managing Director Belinda Downie, marking the end of its long journey through private collections and its return to where its story began.

Struck in 1899, the year The Perth Mint opened its doors, the Half Sovereign is believed to be the only known example in existence.

Created as a Coin of Record and never intended for circulation, it represents the highest standards of craftsmanship at a pivotal moment in the State’s history.

For more than a century, the coin remained out of public reach. Now, it will be accessible to all, offering a tangible connection to the early days of Western Australia’s gold rush era and the role the Mint played in shaping the State’s economic development.

Speaking at the handover, Mr Graham reflected on the significance of the moment.

“We’re thrilled to bring this extraordinary piece of our history back home,” he said.

“As the only known example, it’s a powerful symbol of our beginnings and, to us, truly priceless.”

— Paul Graham, Perth Mint CEO

The return of the coin is the result of a strong partnership with Coinworks, whose expertise in rare numismatics has helped preserve and share important pieces of Australia’s monetary history.

“From the beginning, we felt this piece belonged back at The Perth Mint,”

— Belinda Downie, Coinworks Managing Director

“Knowing it will now be shared with the public, rather than remain in private hands, makes this a very special outcome.” Ms Downie said.

The handover was both a historic and symbolic occasion, one that underscores a shared commitment to protecting and celebrating the past. The coin was presented to Chief Executive Officer Paul Graham by Coinworks Managing Director Belinda Downie,

Having been acquired by The Perth Mint, the Half Sovereign will take pride of place on permanent display, where visitors can experience its remarkable detail and enduring story firsthand.

It stands as a reminder of the Mint’s origins, when gold was not only mined in abundance but transformed into currency that supported a growing nation.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a collector, or simply curious, this is a rare opportunity to see an irreplaceable piece of Australia’s heritage up close.
