Rare Coin Returns Home For Limited Exhibition
Coin enthusiasts and history lovers have a rare opportunity to view one of Australia’s most valuable pre-decimal coins on display at The Perth Mint for a limited time.
Believed to be the only known example in existence, The Perth Mint 1899 Half Sovereign was struck in the Mint’s opening year as a Coin of Record, meaning it would never enter circulation.
Records indicate four dies were ordered from The Royal Mint in London that year, but mystery surrounds the coin’s production and survival, adding intrigue to its remarkable history.
The coin is on display courtesy of numismatic specialists Coinworks, ahead of its sale where it is expected to fetch around AUD 600,000.
The Perth Mint General Manager Retail, Tina Kircher, says the exhibition provides a chance for visitors to connect with the Mint’s remarkable past.
“We are thrilled to welcome this exceptional piece of history back to The Perth Mint,” she said.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for people to see an object this special and valuable, and also to engage with the fascinating story behind it.”
One lucky person will also claim their own historic treasure with visitors eligible to enter the draw to win a 1918 Perth Mint Half Sovereign valued at AUD 5,000, courtesy of Coinworks.
Coinworks Managing Director, Belinda Downie, travelled to Perth from Melbourne to oversee the coin’s installation.
“This is about more than just a rare coin,” she said.
“It’s a celebration of Australian history, craftsmanship, and the special place gold holds in the Mint’s story. We are very proud to partner with The Perth Mint to share this with the public.”
Visitors can view The Perth Mint 1899 Half Sovereign for free at The Perth Mint, located at 310 Hay Street, East Perth.
The coin will be on display daily in the Perth Mint foyer from 9:00am – 5:00pm till 13 August.
