Stuart Devlin’s portrayal of the Pride of Australia first appeared on the 1988 Australian Nugget 1oz gold coin. Three and a half decades later, The Perth Mint is delighted to reprise the design for investors seeking precious metal in trusted legal tender format.
Historical design
Weighing approximately 7 kilograms and thought by some to resemble the shape of mainland Australia, the Pride of Australia was unearthed outside Wedderburn, 215 kilometres north of Melbourne, in 1981. The coin depicts the remarkable find on a pattern of radial lines with the inscriptions ‘AUSTRALIAN NUGGET’, ‘PRIDE OF AUSTRALIA’ and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark. Also on the reverse is the coin’s weight, fineness, and year-date.
Memorial Obverse
The coin bears the official Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Obverse, featuring the Jody Clark effigy supplemented with the dates of Her Majesty’s reign – ‘1952 – 2022’. Also included on the obverse is the coin’s monetary denomination.
Authentication feature
For additional peace of mind, the coin incorporates an authentication feature in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter. Detectable under a magnifying glass, it is designed to make it significantly more difficult for the coin to be counterfeited.
Presentation
The coin is presented in a protective acrylic capsule.
