Story

Historical sovereigns

The Perth Mint opened on 20 June 1899 to manufacture sovereigns from Western Australian gold. With a nominal value of one British pound sterling (£1), sovereigns were highly respected circulating coins acceptable around the globe. The Perth Mint struck 690,992 sovereigns dated 1899, the first of 106 million sovereigns produced up to 1931. Each coin was distinguished by a ‘P’ mintmark.

The first

Presented in premium grade Very Fine condition, the 1899 Sovereign is one of the first sovereigns struck by The Perth Mint and portrays Benedetto Pistrucci’s neo-classical masterpiece, St George and the Dragon. The coin’s obverse bears the Sir Thomas Brock 'Veiled Head' effigy of Queen Victoria.
