Big red

The red kangaroo is Australia’s largest living marsupial. With the male often referred to as a ‘big red’, they successfully inhabit arid regions, thanks to an ability to survive when water is scarce. Capable of reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h, red kangaroos move with a characteristic bounding motion on muscular hind legs.

Classic kangaroo design

Each coin portrays a bounding kangaroo surrounded by stylised rays of sunlight. The inscription ‘AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO’, and the coin’s weight, purity, and year-date encircle the central motif. Also included in the design are the words ‘RED KANGAROO’, and a ‘P125’ mintmark, signifying The Perth Mint’s 125^th anniversary in 2024.
